Another Godless Goddess: Why Do So Many Have Trouble Believing in Evolution

The evidence is clear, as in a February 2009 Gallup Poll, taken on the eve of the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birthday, that reported only 39 percent of Americans say they “believe in the theory of evolution,” while a quarter say they do not believe in the theory, and another 36…

The problem with these polls is the phrasing of the question. The question should be, “Do you understand the theory of evolution?” and all the pollsters should be well educated on the topic, so every time someone flaunts their blatant misunderstanding of what evolution actually is, the pollster can explain that no, that’s not what the theory of evolution actually is, here’s what it is. Do we ask people what their hearts tell them about other facts? Do you believe in the theory of plate tectonics? Do you believe that having heterosexual vaginal-penile penetrative sex can get fertile women who aren’t on birth control pregnant? Do you believe that the Earth orbits the Sun, or does your heart tell you it’s the other way around? By asking about belief rather than understanding, we’re allowing legitimacy to this ignorance by pretending like facts are matters of the opinions of laymen, and not the careful studies done by experts. I MEAN, WHAT DO THOSE POINTY-HEADED EXPERTS KNOW, RIGHT? WHAT THE FUCK DO THEY KNOW ABOUT THEIR CHOSEN FIELD OF STUDY BESIDES, I DON’T FUCKING KNOW, NEARLY EVERYTHING??

I’m done.
